Last Friday was the ISM Showcase where all Frisco ISD ISM students showcased their work at the UNT campus.
In the weeks leading up to the showcase, we had a mini showcase during lunch at Frisco High. From that mini showcase, I learnt that I needed to buy new shoes that I could stand in. So, I bought some new boots at the last minute, and I have to say, they were lifesavers!
I also learnt how to draw people into conversation. It is similar to fishing, you just have to interest someone in your board, you just have to draw their eye. In order to achieve that, I used a dark blue presentation board with gold accent decorations and a couple of images.
Overall, I was pretty successful in drawing people's attention to look at my board. I must have talked to at least 10 groups during the 2 hours.
Speaking of, the 2 hours started off soooo slow, as there were not many people. However, by 6:05, the room was packed, and people just kept coming up for the next hour. Something I found interesting while talking to different groups was that I did not follow the script, I just talked about what seemed to interest the audience, and that varied with each group. I also think that asking if anyone had any questions at the end of each presentation helped maintain people's interest, as I made them think about my presentation.
From this experience, I learned that many people have had run-ins with anesthesia and surgery; they were able to relate with what I was talking about. This has given me confidence that my original work has the potential to help actual people by informing them about their choices and their health.
Overall, this showcase was an enjoyable experience that has made me certain that I want to study some aspects of public health during college.
