Hello! This week in ISM has been quite satisfying because I have realized that I have grown in terms of being a public speaker, and that my knowledge of pediatric anesthesia has grown; all of this from given one eight to ten minute speech (it was ten minutes for me :D).
The Research Speech
The week of 10/23, the entire class was told that we were going to give a research speech over the span of the next couple of class periods. Of course, I volunteered to go on the first day of giving speeches (no, I didn't...).
For context, a research speech takes about eight to ten minutes and has an accompanying slideshow with visuals and minimal text. It is meant to be built off of the introduction speeches that we did at beginning of the year (I kept the same introduction and ending, which revolved around dreams).
In the hours leading up to when I had to give my speech, I prepared my slideshow (which was 23 slides) and a script. I was more experienced than I was at the beginning of the year because of my Seminar class, and all of the speeches I had give for that class; As such, I have found that a rough script is easier to follow and more forgiving, especially when having to manage a slideshow at the same time.
During the speech, I did read off the slides to some extent, but I did not rely on the slides as a script. Because I created the slides, and I did the research, it was so easy to give the speech. Additionally, I was less nervous during the research speech than I usually am.
I guess it help to talk about a topic that you are passionate about.
